Globo is the Spanish word for a lob. In padel it is arguably the most important shot in the game: a high ball over the opponents at the net that forces them to turn and run back, so your team can move forward and take the net.
Why the lob matters more in padel than tennis
The pair at the net controls the point. Hitting through them is hard, so the lob is the main way to swap positions.
How to hit a good globo
- Open the racket face and lift through the ball with a smooth, long swing.
- Aim high and deep, landing close to the back glass.
- Lob over the backhand side of your opponent where possible.
- Move up to the net with your partner as soon as it is over them.
Common mistakes
- Too short: it gets smashed for a por tres.
- Too long: it flies off the back glass and gives them an easy ball.
