Chiquita: What It Means in Padel and When to Play It

Chiquita (Spanish for “small one”) is a soft, low shot played from the back of the court that drops at the feet of opponents standing at the net. It forces them to volley upwards, giving your team the chance to move forward and take the net.

Why the chiquita works

Players at the net want balls at chest height to attack. A ball dipping at their feet can only be blocked up, which turns defence into attack for you.

How to play a chiquita

  1. Take the ball after the bounce, low and in front of you.
  2. Use a short, controlled swing with a little slice or topspin to make the ball dip.
  3. Aim just over the net towards the centre or the feet of the closest opponent.
  4. Move forward behind it with your partner.

Common mistakes

  • Hitting too high: the ball sits up for an easy volley.
  • Staying back after playing it: the chiquita is a ticket to the net, so use it.

Wear the word: the Chiquita. Hoodie.
