Rulo (from the Spanish for “roll”) is a padel smash hit with topspin. Instead of driving the ball flat, you brush up and over it so it kicks high and forward off the floor, ideally bouncing over the opponents or too high off the back glass to control.
When to use a rulo
When a lob is high but you are too deep to hit a por tres, the rulo still lets you attack. Many players use it to finish points without needing raw power.
How to hit a rulo
- Get under the ball, side-on, as for any remate.
- Contact slightly behind your head rather than in front.
- Brush up and over the ball, finishing across your body.
- Aim deep, near the back glass, so the kick carries it away from the opponents.
