The difference between a mockup and a real product
The gap between a mockup and an actual garment is enormous. I didn't fully understand that at the start.
A mockup is a fantasy. It shows you what something could look like if the fabric was perfect, the print was perfect, the fit was perfect. Reality is different. Reality is minimum order quantities, lead times, sampling costs, and conversations with suppliers who've heard a hundred people with the same idea and watched most of them disappear.
We found our supplier. They do print-on-demand for clothing brands — meaning you don't need to order 500 units to get started. You design the product, a customer orders it, they print and ship it. No stock. No upfront cost beyond the samples.
For a brand at our stage, this was the only model that made sense. We're not Represent. We can't tie up £50,000 in inventory. We needed to prove the product before we scaled the investment.
The first samples arrived. They were better than the mockup. Not perfect — the logo placement needed adjusting, the colourway on one piece wasn't quite right — but genuinely good. Good enough to believe this was real.
That moment — holding the first real AP Club hoodie — is one we won't forget.
